Classroom set-up

Before using the site, a class discussion about each of the themes, their meaning and importance, would be helpful. This discussion could be centred around the theme introduction texts that appear on the site.

A discussion of the chronological framework of the site, which is demonstrated within each theme through use of the timeline, would also be a good starting point. Discussing those civilizations that were contemporaneous will also enable children to start making connections between different past societies.

If the site is being used for study of one particular culture, the best starting point is the A-Z of Cultures.

Introducing the site to your class:

It may be helpful to familiarize pupils with the following points about using the site before they get started:

  1. You can access the Theme Page by clicking on the museum icon at the bottom of the screen.
  2. You can access all content on a particular civilization by clicking the globe icon, which takes you to an A-Z of Cultures page.
  3. You can open the timeline by clicking the pocket watch icon.
  4. You can get a definition of an underlined word by clicking on the word.
  5. A picture or image is clickable if the cursor turns into a hand when you roll over the picture or image.
  6. You must close glossary and photograph windows after you have looked at them, otherwise they will remain open. If there are too many windows open at one time, you will not be able to open any new windows.
